Lord Alderdice, President of Liberal International, has deplored the arrests and intimidation of opposition leaders and the restrictions on international election monitors in Belarus in the run up to the Presidential elections on 19 March. Presidential candidate, Aleksandr Kazulin, and opposition leaders Anatoly Lebedko and Vintsuk Vyachorka are amongst those who have been arrested.

A group of accredited election monitors from the OSCE have been refused entry visas, and some members of the ‘Support Initiative for Liberals in the Baltic States’ (SILBA), a Danish NGO, were arrested and expelled from Belarus when they attempted to observe the early voting which started on 14 March.

Lord Alderdice stated that, "Persecution and suppression of political opposition is incompatible with democracy. Election monitors are trying to ensure that this election is free and fair. Unfortunately, it appears that instead it will be marked by the same undemocratic abuses that characterise daily life for the people of Belarus under the current administration."

Liberal International urges the EU to follow through with its threatened imposition of sanctions on Belarus if it becomes clear that the March presidential elections will not meet international election standards. Liberal International further calls upon its Member parties to apply pressure on the government of Belarus so that election monitors are able to work free from arrest and intimidation in the interests of the democratic rights of the people of Belarus.

Lord Alderdice, Presidente de la Internacional Liberal, ha deplorado los arrestos e intimidación de los líderes de la oposición, así como restricciones impuestas a los inspectores internacionales, en Bielorrusia, en las elecciones complementarias de Marzo 19. El candidato presidencial, Aleksandr Kazulin y los líderes de la oposición Anatoly Lebedko y Vintsuk Vyachorka figuran entre los arrestados.

A un grupo de inspectores electivos acreditados por la OSCE se ha denegado visas de entrada, y algunos miembros del SILBA (Iniciativa de Apoyo a Liberales en estados bálticos), una ONG danesa, fueron arrestados y expulsados de Bielorrusia cuando trataron de observar la votación inicial, que comenzó en Marzo 14.

Lord Alderdice indicó que, “La persecución y supresión de la oposición política es incompatible con la democracia. Los inspectores electorales tratan de asegurar que esta elección es libre y justa. Desafortunadamente, parece que, al contrario, quedará marcada por los mismos abusos anti-democráticos que caracterizan la vida cotidiana del pueblo de Bielorrusia bajo la presente administración."

La Internacional Liberal exhorta a la UE a proseguir con la imposición de sanciones a Bielorrusia si es patente que las elecciones presidenciales de Marzo no cumplen con patrones electorales internacionales. Aún más, la Internacional Liberal llama a sus partidos miembros a que apliquen presiones sobre el gobierno de Bielorrusia, de forma que los inspectores electorales puedan trabajar libres de arrestos e intimidaciones, en nombre de los derechos democráticos del pueblo de Bielorrusia.
